You can only write the next word.
Deep down I knew I wanted to be a writer. But my dream was buried under layers of fear, self-doubt, and a myriad of other thoughts and emotions that paralyzed me and directed my energy elsewhere. If I never tried, then I could never fail.
Occasionally, the dream would find an outlet, like lava oozing up from the cracked crust. I would write a poem or a story and on a whim submit it to the New Yorker Magazine, or to other literary publications. The rejections were swift and final: no thanks.
After being fired from yet another job, I packed up my journal and a pencil and went to Starbucks. Two months later, I self-published 18 Poems and 1 Story. It has sold, to date, twenty four copies. But I was hooked. I had tasted the dream and wanted more.
There was no ‘aha’ moment; no Damascus Road experience. But when I think about the last year, what changed for me was the realization that I can only write the next word. I cannot write the novel that will come later; that poem will just have to wait its turn. The next word is waiting.
And one of those next words was the seed of BAMDIV. In its final form, BAMDIV will look and read much different than today. For now, it is a dream finding its form in letters and words, each one following the one before and blazing the trail for the one to follow. Join me.
