Money – $$$
Let’s face it: art rarely pays the bills. Most of us will not write a best-selling novel or paint a picture that sells for millions. We, the artists in exile, live among the businesspeople, cubicle-dwellers, teachers, and other professionals trying to eke out a living. So, what to do?!
I work two part-time jobs and rely on the generosity of family and friends (while my wife works as well). But along with that, I offer the following services that I believe can help other artists, advance the common good, and maintain the integrity I desire in my work.
Publishing
Let me help you publish your writing. Your book of poems, your novel, your autobiography, or whatever you have will most likely not end up on the shelves in Barnes & Noble, but you will have a tangible collection that you can market for sale if you so choose. Knowing where to go (on-line) and how to edit your work is often a let-down after the creating process: having another person to help push this along can be extremely beneficial!
Cost: Depends on size of work and choice of publishing: but for an average novel (50,000 words) or smaller, the editing and revising fee would be in the $50 range, while complete editing, revising, and publishing would run closer to $100 (along with variable costs for numbers of copies you wanted). Advice and opinions are always free!
Painting Commissions
In the days before photography, painters could make a nice living doing portraits of wealthy individuals. But what makes a good portrait? It could be an exact replication of the individual, yet still sit lifeless like pigment on a canvas. What makes a good painting is that it connects with the soul of the viewer and/or possessor. My paintings may not be technically proficient; but I promise that I will find the soul of the subject and bring it forth in the work.
C ost
Portrait of Individual/Individuals- $50 – $100 depending on number of people and size desired. Half due up front and Half due upon delivery if pleased with product. If you are not pleased, I’ll try again and you keep your second installment. (I usually work from a picture- you do not have to sit down for six hours in a single pose!)
Landscape- $50-$75 depending on size desired. It can be a general commission ‘the ocean at sunrise’, or a specific picture you have such as your grandmother’s house in Vermont.
Murals (single or series)- $25- $100+ depending on size and number desired. These could range from still-lifes (fruit on a table) to a series of abstract paintings that are for a specific room (like the ‘Seagram’s Collection” by Marc Rothko).
Purchase my books
I have an on-line store set up at http://stores.lulu.com/samarajanebrown where you can buy books that I have written. If you see on the website a painting that catches your eye, shoot me an e-mail and I’ll let you know if it is available for sale. Thanks.
I can be reached at bamdiv@yahoo.com for any of the above services, or for advice and opinions which are always free!
